5 Reasons to Avoid a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring

Hidden halo engagement rings are popular, but are they right for you?

By Stephanie Dore

We all know what a halo engagement ring is, right? Arguably the hottest engagement ring trend of the early 2000s and still going strong, it’s a style that surrounds your center stone with a ring of tiny diamonds, sometimes two rows deep!

But the new kid on the block, for those who maybe want something a little less ostentatious, is the hidden halo engagement ring. But in our humble opinion, this under-the-ring and under-the-radar trend isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Here are 5 reasons why to avoid them.

If you’re still not convinced after reading this article, shop hidden halo engagement rings since this trend’s not going anywhere.

First Things First. What is a Hidden Halo Ring?

So, like its name says, this halo is hidden. It’s not on the top of your ring, facing out like the center stone. Instead, a hidden halo ring encircles the center diamond from the side, just under the prong tips. It adds sparkle from a new angle without seeming too over-the-top. There are a lot of different styles of hidden diamond details, from arched baskets completely decked out in brilliance to single hidden stones set within each “petal” of a tulip shank. There’s something for everyone. But there are also downsides.

Diamond Accents Can Scratch Your Wedding Band

If you’re stacking your engagement ring with your wedding band, having diamonds on the side of your ring is a dangerous game.

Diamonds are among the hardest materials on Earth, and they can scratch gold pretty easily. So if you’re stacking a diamond halo and a gold wedding band next to each other, you can not only scratch up your wedding band, but the friction of the two rings together can wear away at the tiny prongs that hold your halo diamonds in place, which can result in loose stones.

But if you can manage, then by all means. We’re not really going to argue against extra sparkle. Think a hidden halo might be right for you? Shop hidden halo engagement rings.

Hidden Halo Rings Often Ride High

Oftentimes, hidden halo engagement rings sit higher than other settings, given that designers have to make space for those little beauties on the side of something that’s already pretty small.

If you’re looking for a low profile setting, you’ll have a tougher time squeezing a hidden halo in. Our Plunge Hidden Halo Ring, though, was specifically designed to sit as low as possible, complete with a sculptural hidden halo unlike any other.

Hidden Halos Aren’t Always Hidden

If you’re the type who wants your engagement and wedding rings to sit together completely flush (with no gaps in between), then the hidden halo may not be right for you.

Many hidden halos, and many engagement rings in general, have a center head that sticks out wider than its band, which creates that gap. Look for a center setting that sits above the band height for your rings to make the perfect stack.

Hidden Halo Engagement Rings Are A Waste of Money (to some)

Here’s the burning question many folks have for you, dear reader: Why would you want to keep your sparkle hidden away?

Most people are looking at your ring from above, so they won’t see your hidden halo.

But you’re going to have a pretty consistent view of it from the side, so do it for yourself. You deserve it. Plus, it won’t detract from your gorgeous center stone!
